Workshops

Professional development training:

AutismService specializes in providing a series of workshops with topics related to autism and developmental disabilities. Our hands-on workshops facilitate knowledge transfers suitable for all skill levels, and are appropriate for parents (and relatives), special education staff, tutors, teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, neuropshychiatrists, social workers, and others who work with children and adults with developmental disabilities including autism and related disorders.

These events (duration: 2 days, single day, and half-day) are led by our principal consultant, dott.ssa Lembo who discusses and illustrates behavioral strategies through interactive sessions with the audience by using practical exercises, role-play examples and videos.

Our workshops include sessions on:

WORKSHOP #1

Introduction to the principles of ABA: strategies to manage maladaptive behaviors

Participants will learn about Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and functional analysis of behavior with use of video illustrations, as well as role-play examples of effective teaching strategies to decrease undesired behaviours in both the natural environment and the intensive teaching environment.

WORKSHOP #2

Introduction to the principles of VB: a behavioral analysis of linguistic structure

Participants will learn about Verbal Behavior (VB) and how to teach the basic verbal operants identified by Skinner (e.g. mand, echoic, tact, intraverbal, etc.) with the use of video illustrations, as well as role-play examples of effective teaching strategies that increase communication skills.

WORKSHOP #3

Introduction to the principles of AAC: how to select appropriate communicative strategies for non-vocal children

Participants will learn about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies and how to teach usage of communication books, SGDs (speech generating devices), tablets, sign language, and environmental control tools. The participants will also learn the principles of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) by practicing the six teaching phases.

WORKSHOP #4

Teaching Verbal Behavior: how to stimulate vocalizations and increase the length of utterance in non-vocal children

The participants will learn advanced techniques to increase the vocal repertoire in children with language delay such as transitioning from sign language to vocal verbal behaviour, stimulus-stimulus paring procedures, and how to teach advanced learners to request information using WH questions. The participants will be practicing teaching strategies to increase verbal vocal communication skills in both the natural environment and the intensive teaching environment.

Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that all participants have attended workshops #1, #2 and #3.

WORKSHOP #5

Teaching techniques: practicing Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT), Mix and Vary instructional demands and Pivotal Response Training (PRT)

The participants will be practicing ABA/VB teaching procedures to increase pre-academic and academic skills in children with learning difficulties in an intensive teaching environment.

Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that all participants have attended workshops #1, #2, #3, and #4.

WORKSHOP #6

How to integrate the ABA/VB approach into classroom activities

The participants will learn how to teach children with autism in dyads, small and larger groups, as well as how to teach academic skills by establishing instructional control. The participants will also learn how to adapt worksheets and develop a lesson plan for students with learning difficulties.

Prerequisites: Attendees must be teachers.

WORKSHOP #7

How to develop and increase play skills in children with developmental disorders

The participants will learn how to teach play skills to children with developmental disorders and how to transition from a structured play to an independent play and imaginative play.

WORKSHOP #8

Introduction to the principles of Social Cognition: how to develop or increase social skills in people with Autism and Asperger Syndrome

The participants will learn how to teach to children with Asperger Syndrome or Autism the ability to recognize the different levels of their own and others' social minds; to manage their behaviors while considering how others perceive and respond to them; and to adapt to people and situations around them from formal to causal settings.

WORKSHOP #9

Sexuality and disabilities

The participants will learn how to break the stereotype that people with a disability are either uninterested in romance or sexuality, or are unable to participate in sexual activity.
